Visit Whitman One Last Time!
Closing Walt Whitman Elementary Extends Community Invitation
Walt Whitman Elementary, located 6557 South Acoma Street, has been a good neighbor to its surrounding Littleton community since 1961. In past years, the school has had an Art Fair combined with an Ice Cream Social to display the artwork of its students. The school seems to come alive when decorated with the children’s beautiful artwork. This year will be Whitman’s very last event of this kind, as the school will be closing. This event is special because Whitman is extending a community invitation for anyone who would like to come and visit one final time.
In recent years, the school has added an extra element to this Art Fair/Ice Cream Social. This element is fashioned after the work of Dr. Richard and Michele Steckel – authors of ‘The Milestone Project’. Whitman’s students have learned to write what we call ‘small moment’ pieces that highlight their experiences, and have had photographs of themselves taken to accompany their work. This year they are focusing on writing a memoir, a brief literary description of a best moment that contains an element of reflection. Whitman would like to invite community members to participate in writing their own vignette. Your picture will be taken and displayed with your work. Your finished piece is needed by May 8, 2009.
Former families, community members, past volunteers and those who hold good memories of Walt Whitman Elementary are all invited to attend this special evening on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 from 6pm-8pm.
