December Class Newsletter

Dear Parents and Students,

We have started unit 5 in both math groups, and in Mrs. Drake’s class this deals with expressing big numbers using exponents, computation, and estimation. We are going to try to finish unit 5 before we break for the holidays, so that we can start a new unit when we return in January.

We have been focusing on learning about all kinds of poetry; both in writing and reading, and now we will begin to write our own poetry. We plan to have a poetry “tea” to celebrate our writings at the end of December. Look for a flyer announcing an exact date and time to come in about a week.

We will be moving back into the study of the regions of the U.S. now that we have finished our study of rocks and minerals. We will look at the Midwest this month and complete that section by the end of December as well.

There is so much going on this month, that I am not asking the students to prepare a book report, but they should still be reading every night for 20 minutes. They may read whatever they would like, but it should be a chapter book, please.

Here are the important dates for this month. I wish you all a very happy holiday season, and a happy new year as well!

Sincerely,
Marlene Drake

 Online LibraryMinimize

Dear Parents,

We know that it may be tricky to find time to get to the library and check out new books or sometimes your children may attempt to read books that are a challenge. Although we encourage children to visit the library and find books of interest, we now have a new way for you and your child to read at home! Our new Houghton Mifflin reading series allows children to access hundreds of ‘just right’ books from home by accessing http://eduplace.com/eservices. You’ll find this program to be such a motivator and a frequented website that you’ll want to add to your favorites! We will also have a link on our Literacy Web page

Follow the directions below and enjoy this fantastic opportunity to read hundreds of new books from the comfort of your home.
