 Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented (G/T) education programs are solidly in place in all district schools. Identification and nomination for services is based on exceptional student aptitude, achievement, performance, observable behaviors, interest, and motivation. Programming services and options are matched to individual student needs and may include cluster grouping, resource center instruction, acceleration by subject or grade, honors classes, Advanced Placement classes, and the International Baccalaureate program. Before- and after-school enrichment activities are available for all students and include chess clubs, Math Olympiad, Spelling Bee, and Destination ImagiNation. A summer school enrichment program offers art, science, music, technology, social studies, language arts, and math classes for elementary and middle school students.

About 14 percent of LPS students are identified for G/T services, just slightly higher than the national average. CSAP test results show 42 percent of third grade students receiving G/T services scored at the advanced level, while 55 percent of fourth graders scored at the advanced level. On the CSAP math test, 79 percent of fifth graders scored at the advanced level.

A district coordinator oversees and supports the Gifted and Talented facilitators in each school program and provides services to students.
